Back to The Apex for the second time in four days, this time with my sister, Tamara—and it was all about pop royalty. Jason Donovan, the Australian actor-turned-singer who defined late 80s pop for many of us, returned to the UK stage in style, proving that charm, energy and a knack for showmanship don’t fade with time.
Pop, Theatre and Heartfelt Moments
From the moment Donovan stepped on stage, the room lit up. Often dismissed in the past for having a limited vocal range, he put those doubts to bed early—his vocals were solid throughout, and his charisma carried the rest. Classic Stock Aitken Waterman hits like Too Many Broken Hearts, Especially for You and Sealed With a Kiss had the crowd up and dancing, with more than a few lyrics shouted joyfully back at the stage.
But this wasn’t just a pop greatest hits set. Donovan took time to celebrate his evolution as a performer, weaving in numbers from his theatre career, including hits from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It was a reminder that he’s not just a pop figure from our youth, but a seasoned and versatile performer.
And then there was the bra. Yes, really. One enthusiastic fan made her admiration clear with a flying lingerie tribute mid-set—another memorable moment in an evening packed with them.

A Personal Connection with the Crowd
Jason’s between-song chats were heartfelt and often funny, as he reminisced about his journey from Neighbours heartthrob to UK chart-topper and West End leading man. He came across as warm, self-aware, and genuinely appreciative of the continued support. It made the whole night feel intimate—like catching up with a familiar old friend who just happens to have a back catalogue of chart hits.
One of the emotional high points was a duet with his father, actor Terence Donovan (better known to many UK fans as Doug Willis from Neighbours). The duet, which combined live vocals from Jason with old family footage of his dad singing I’ve Got You Under My Skin in 1961, was beautifully timed and executed. It was touching without being overly sentimental—a proper lump-in-the-throat moment.
The Apex Atmosphere & Family Bonding
The Apex continues to prove itself as a top-tier regional venue. Excellent acoustics, relaxed atmosphere, and close-up views that give these gigs a real personal touch. This show felt like a celebration, not just of Donovan’s music but of the enduring connection between artists and their long-time fans.
On a personal note, it was extra special to share the night with my youngest sister—her first JD gig, and by the looks of it, not her last. She even made a few friends in the crowd (although one fan’s encyclopaedic and borderline obsessive knowledge of Jason and his kids’ whereabouts gave off more Black Mirror than Neighbours).

Final Thoughts
Cheesy? Absolutely. But there’s nothing wrong with cheese—it’s comforting, familiar and, when done right, completely satisfying. Jason Donovan delivered exactly what the crowd came for: nostalgia, fun, personality, and a reminder of how music can transport us.
In a world full of cynicism, JD brings a bit of sparkle and sincerity. And for one night in Bury St Edmunds, that was more than enough.
