Johnny Dexter was a well-known fictional footballer character in the British comic, Roy of the Rovers, during the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Dexter played as a centre-back for Danefield United and England and typically as a left-back for Melchester Rovers.
He featured in three different comic strips and was a favorite among fans, often appearing on the cover of the comic’s annuals. Dexter’s debut was in the inaugural issue of the weekly Roy of the Rovers comic, dated 25 September 1976, in the comic strip titled The Hard Man. His character was known for his rugged playstyle and hot temper. Initially, he played for Danefield United, then moved to the Spanish team Real Granpala, where he met Hungarian manager Viktor Boskovic.
The comic strip, written by Barrie Tomlinson and drawn by Doug Maxted, was light-hearted with humorous elements. Johnny often found himself in off-field comedic situations. One memorable storyline involved him trying to escape from Italy in drag after refusing to sign for a top Serie A team and ending up in prison.
The Hard Man comic strip ran for nine years until it ended when a new character, Bobby Williams, replaced Dexter. He then requested a transfer which was accepted by manager Viktor Boskovic. Surprisingly, the only team to bid for the former England international was the Football League’s worst team, Burnside Athletic. Johnny then made his final appearance in the “Hard Man” comic strip on 10 August 1985.
